Outdated Wiring Carries Threat
If your company resides in a building built in 1970, or before, it’s likely it was built using outdated wiring methods. Wiring methods from 40 years ago are considered obsolete and carry a significant safety hazard.
Wiring installation in older buildings often utilized suspended wires through ran through studs and joists without a ground conductor. Rather than installing new systems, building owners in the past would modify their systems to make it up-to-date. These improper modifications of outdated wiring methods often caused fires.
Another common wiring issue in commercial buildings of 30 years ago has been the use of aluminum material. Due to a shortage of copper back in the 60’s and 70’s, it was often used as a substitute to copper wiring. Aluminum today is safe and reliable, yet copper wiring is most often used in commercial buildings.
If you experience electrical issues at your business’ building, and you have aluminum wiring, you should know that most commercial insurance policies will not cover aluminum wiring-related fire damage since it’s a known hazard. Make sure you check with your insurance agent.
